Caring for your Melbourne Shoes

Since the Melbourne has a leather upper, it’s a good idea to use a leather conditioner every few months, or as needed if the leather looks dry or dull.

To clean your Melbournes, use any commercially available leather cleaner and follow up with a leather conditioner. For tough spots, gently scrub with a warm, damp cloth or damp soft bristle brush and allow to air dry. Then follow up with a leather conditioner.

WARNING: It is possible to over-condition, which may result in the leather looking and feeling greasy or oily.

O.k. for walking leisurely on easy ground

Compared to other Xero shoes, the Melbourne is very wide such that my foot "floats around” as if I wore an oversized slipper. Obviously some of the width is necessary to be able to slip into the shoe, but too much is too much: I can use the shoe to walk at a leisurely pace on paved flat surfaces, but as soon as I get on an inclined surface or on a trail, walking becomes really uncomfortable (let alone running !). I have exchanged the slippery original insoles against thicker felt insoles and I wear “no slip” socks, but that has only solved half of the problem. Another issue is the sole that has a decent grip on dry surfaces, but very little grip on wet stones and no grip in the mud. The only Xero shoe so far that I would not buy again. P.S. I have waited over 12 months before writing this review to be sure to have enough experience with the shoe.

great boot for my homestead

I bought this shoe to use on my homestead for light work. I really like it for this use. It is great for most lighter tasks, but any heavy duty chores (like digging) and the sole is uncomfortable. It keeps water out when it rains, although prolonged exposure does mean wet feet. The soles are slippery on wet surfaces including rocks, which is a pity and make me yearn for the good ol' vibram soles. If the sole performance would be better on wet surfaces this shoe would be excellent.
