Unclear sizing

I ordered size 39.5 black and grey Phoenix Knit. At first I did not understand how can the grey one be fairly OK, yet the black one small. (Also for reference, my normal size is 39, but even 39.5 seems to be small to me from this one.) I realized the width differs hugely. I measured both shoes (it was also easily visible when putting them next to each other) and there is a roughly 1.5-2 cm difference in width among the grey one and black one. (Sent pics about that too to the helpdesk.) That is huge as when I asked for some info about which size I should then order I was told that the width for 40 is 9.2, for 40.5 it is 9.4. So even between two different sizes, the width difference is only 0.2 cm. So having almost 2cm difference for the same size, but different color is really extreme. Now I still do not know which size I should order as I do not know if the black one or the grey one had the right width, and I do not know what is the accurate way to measure it to get to the equivalent of 9.2cm. And clearly the info that says: "We recommend ordering your usual size." is inaccurate. The shoes look very pretty though. And helpdesk is very responsive and kind. It is just so time consuming to get back 100x to get the real answer I need. Now I will have to write to them again to figure out the official width of size 39.5 as well. And info about how to measure the width for this exact model accurately. And of course no idea, how the return will work out. I read some not too positive experience about that below. I also have a pair of runner shoes from Xero - that I bought in a shop, so I could try it. I have no issues with that one.
